What is IT?

IPv6 networking stack

IPv6 networking stack

embeNET Node, our 6TiSCH-compatible software, is an embeddable wireless communication stack that provides support for front-end hardware (sensors and RF radio transceivers) and makes all the difference. It is core to reliable mesh networking for large-scale installations (1000+ nodes) with advanced routing and scalability features. Supports IPv6 and UDP with built-in security.

Out-of-the-box services

embeNET comes packed with additional services such as built-in telemetry and diagnostics, automated large-scale firmware update, precise clock synchronization across the whole network, as well as support for application-level protocols such as MQTT, CoAP, and more. The stack can also support fast asynchronous peer-to-peer messages and coexist with Bluetooth LE in a single chip. And all of that works on various ranges of low-cost microcontrollers.

Ultimate networking platform

embeNET Border Router software supports Linux, Windows, and RTOS-enabled hardware platforms as gateways to the wireless network. It’s easy to set up and integrate. In addition, we provide an optional embeNET Portal web application for remote management, diagnostics, and maintenance of the deployed embeNET devices. This gives a highly integrated set of tools that brings the networking experience to the next level.

What are the common applications?

Lighting application

Lighting

Indoor and outdoor lighting applications feature hundreds or thousands devices that have to work together in a highly synchronous manner. It’s challenging for most wireless communication protocols. But not for embeNET.

Why embeNET?

Large scalability

Large scalability

Connect thousands of devices within one network without getting into congestion problems. We use Time Slotted Channel Hopping (TSCH) mode of IEEE 802.15.4 to deliver a self-organizing mesh network with greatly reduced collisions. This allows us to build networks spanning from dozens to 1000+ nodes and plan for the future growth.

Large scalability

Long range and coverage

Connect remote locations and hard to reach places covering large terrain with a single network. Our solution can work in sub-GHz bands allowing better signal propagation, obstacle avoidance and material penetration. Combined with multi-hop networking it leads to large effective coverage.

Large scalability

Lightweight and hardware agnostic

No vendor lock-in and possibility to use various, cost-effective hardware platforms. Our networking stack has already been ported to various hardware chips from many vendors. If your products  already feature an LPWAN radio transceiver chances are that your hardware platform is also already covered. The ability to work on various chips combined with low memory footprint allows for cost optimisation and reduces vendor lock-in and supply chain disruption risks.

Large scalability

Standard networking protocols

IPv6 and UDP - a solid combination of proven networking protocols Each device in the embeNET network has a unique IPv6 address and provides familiar, socket based data transport services based on UDP.  Plain, simple, and easy to build upon. We also support multicast addressing for even better large-scale data transport experience.

We have successfully used the embeNET framework in the applications of large distributed networks of sensors for underground coal mines. The system has been working flawlessly for many years and exceeded our expectations even though it has to operate in harsh underground conditions. It has been deployed in a number of locations around the world. The support team proved to be highly skilled and helped us to solve all the challenges on the way in a fully professional manner. We can surely recommend embeNET for demanding industrial applications.

Constantly developing our building automation products, we reviewed wireless mesh technologies available on the market. The tools offered to us only worked for small scale networks and degraded significantly for an increased number of nodes (hundreds of devices). embeNET turned out to be the solution to that problem, delivering reliable wireless mesh networking with a number of additional features. This gives us a lot of comfort when offering embeNET-based products to our clients.

In my opinion embeNET is a network protocol which clearly fills a gap in the wireless communication market, especially for professional and industrial applications. In the last months we've spent a plenty of time with the Embetech team delivering workshops in various locations which were very well received. We see growing interest in the technology, as it solves practical problems our customers are facing.

We’ve made the decision to outsource some of our electronic development and were recommended to try Embetech services by one of our suppliers. This soon proved to be a good decision. The Embetech team found a serious problem in the radio platform we were trying to use and helped us fix it. Since then our collaboration has been long-lasting and fruitful.

The embeNET platform delivers reliable mesh networking which fills a gap for many industrial and professional applications seeking scalability. It’s a great protocol option for the radio modules we produce.

How to start?

Step 1

Program the nodes

Get a couple of evaluation boards and program them using one of our demo packages

Supported evaluation boards
Step 2

Setup a border router

Connect one of the boards to your PC (Windows/Linux). It will act as a network card and make your PC the border router.

Step 3

Start the network

Run the embeNET Border Router software to bring up a virtual network interface and start your wireless network:

Windows
Linux
Windows (PowerShell):
# Run embeNET Border Router
> embenet_br.exe
# Check that the networking interface is up
> ipconfig
# Wait for the devices to connect. Once connected you can ping each one or use them as any other IPv6-enabled device
> ping aaaa::0080:115:500:db30
